Huawei, Qualcomm Join Hands on UMTS Technology
February 15, 2008
Qualcomm, a US-based CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) developer, and Chinese telecom equipment supplier Huawei have signed on February 4, 2008 a technology transfer agreement for advanced Node B/base station receiver design that can be applied to all UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System).

According to a Nikkei report, the agreement covers a new technology that boasts a 60% improvement of the data throughput performance of HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) networks. Technology thus transferred is expected to facilitate Huawei's deployment of advanced 3G networks in the markets using any types of UMTS-based technologies.

To date, Huawei has won 44 contracts to deploy UMTS/HSPA technology. In addition to the technology mentioned above, Qualcomm and Huawei have cooperated on other technological developments as well, including VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) interoperability tests in Shanghai.
